Verdict - A bafflingly inept mess, but it does occasionally display flashes of brilliance.

Fantastic Four Watch trailerRelease date : August 21, 2015

This Fantastic Four reboot very clearly features all the typical signs of a film tampered by studio interferences: early into production, the director Josh Frank tweeted that the great ideas he had sadly never made their way to the final product (and then deleted the tweet), and this is only far too evident from the film that it has turned out to be. It has some very basic lapses and it's baffling how a film supposed to be mounted at such a scale features instances of such enormous incompetence. It has the look and feel of a lowly B-movie and while I'm a sucker for stuff like that, Fantastic Four is far too messy to be enjoyable on any level. It's not a charmingly self-aware and witty B-movie in the vein of, say, Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin - this is a post-Dark Knight superhero film which taps into the darker side of being a superhero (something which Trank's previous film, the superb Chronicle, did with great aplomb.) But sadly, although Fantastic Four does feature an occasional moment of shrewd brilliance or insight, it fails to make anything out of it's key choices - it feels like one movie being pulled apart in different directions. Which is a pity, because those moments of brilliance hint at some truly great ideas, and as Trank mentioned in that infamous tweet of his, sadly we'll probably never get to see that version of the film.
