The Farrelly Brothers will always be judged by two of their efforts for perhaps the rest of their lives, 'There's Something About Mary' (1998) and 'Dumb & Dumber' (1994); the former more than the latter. What seemed gross back then might seem pretty tame today and with Judd Apatow's entry over the past few years, the mantle of the risque yet sensitive romantic-comedy has been successfully passed on with movies like 'The 40 Year Old Virgin' and 'Knocked Up'. So how do the Farrelly Brothers stack up in current times in an arena they more or less set up? Mixed results at best & no thanks to the Indian censor board either.

Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) have been with their respective spouses for over twenty years and the usual mid-age male cliche goes in comedies, they have gotten "bored". Their constant "admiration" at other younger women starts to be more than just an annoyance for their wives; so they decide to give the two men a Hall Pass. While the two wives are away for a vacation, Rick & Fred have one week off from their marital contract to indulge in all the junk food, alcohol and most importantly sex, they can get, with no strings attached of course. So off they go in search of their sexual "el-dorado", hoping to regain some misplaced "lost youth". But do they really want what they might actually get? Will the wives also have a little adventure of their own?

The proportion of humor to somewhat sappy sentimentality is skewed in favor of dramatic shenanigans which upsets the apple cart and never allows the movie to really settle in. While there are some quality jokes, the gross factor, which seems forced doesn't allow the audience to really settle in. You are pretty aware that the jokes are being done over-the-top for shock value rather than good humor. So all their attempts at getting laid or picking up girls becomes pretty repetitive after he first few jokes, here's where the dramatic element helps keep the ship afloat, by contrasting their tales with the tales of their wives and creating doubts in the minds of the characters and a reflection of their actions. Which sounds good in a line but the movie isn't able to expand it convincingly beyond the obvious dilemma. And honestly I went in for the comedy not recycled dramatic material from a dozen other similar movies.

'Hall Pass' has its moments and a few really shine in humor and heart but overall it lacks the energy and constant supply of quality jokes to make it truly work. It is at best just another romantic comedy that you can catch on DVD or television a few months later.
