Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1Watch trailerRelease date : November 19, 2010

So the final movie of the "Boy Wizard" arrives...well not the final movie, but the first part of the final one; the second one shall release in July 2011. By splitting the final book into two parts, plenty of opportunities were open. The audiences and fans hoped that where the earlier movies had failed at capturing the nuances and minute sub-plots of the books; this movie would address that. The studios surely thought that the cash-cow franchise that was on its last legs could be milked for a few dollars more. So which one wins over in the end? For part one I'd go with the latter.

Considering nearly half the world has already read the books, I wouldn't delve in the details of the plot other than a few points. The wizarding world has been plunged into darkness after the death of Albus Dumbledore & the Deatheaters led by Voldemort seem to be gaining control of everything right from Hogwarts to the Ministry of Magic. Harry Potter is a fugitive along with his partners in crime Hermione & Ron. They are in search of the Horcruxes which when destroyed shall also spell the doom of Voldemort. They learn about the legend of The Deathly Hallows which may or may not hold the key to final victory.

The biggest opportunity squandered here is the one to flesh out all the events form the final book. The movie attempts to spend an inordinate time with the trio and give them these emotional moments, it forgets to flesh out the larger picture outside. Plus the actors aren't highly competent when it comes to delving into emotion. Hence a few scenes work others just feel incredibly groan-worthy.

The one standout sequence is an animated rendering of the story of the Deathly Hallows. A highly inspired piece of work, which is also perhaps the most lucid piece of storytelling in this overlong and at times rambling movie. A few others like the sneaking into the ministry of magic; don't know which tone to adapt; go with humor or sympathy.

The cinematography is marvelously captures the gloomy atmosphere which conveys the sense of despair prevalent throughout the film. Most known characters like Snape & Umbridge get a token amount of screen time while other new ones like Gellert Grindelwald are offered nothing more than a sketchy introduction. The death sequences in particular leave a lot to be desired except for perhaps the penultimate one.

The movie does have its moments but they are few and far in between. Technically it's quite competent but ultimately let down by a snail-paced script that itself isnt sure in which direction it wants to go. Inspite of the movie being split in two, many of the same problems that plagued the earlier adaptations when moving from the book to screen, plague this one too. Well go ahead and watch it, it should satisfy if not thrill most Harry Potter fans till the last one arrives.
