Verdict - A bland, disappointing thriller

    InfernoWatch trailerRelease date : October 14, 2016

    A bland, disappointing thriller

Ron Howard's Inferno is a plot-point heavy thriller with little else going for it. There's a Story, one designed in such a way as to incorporate as many twists as possible and sound as high-minded as possible - there's a hero on a mission to sav the world, there's numerous references to Dante who also inspires the title, there's smart-sounding but frankly silly premise involving a fanatic who wants to destroy the world in order to salvage it, there's references to history, literature, philosophy, biology, environment sciences...

It's overstuffed with things, but the film does little with what it's got on its hand. Tom Hanks plays Professor Robert Langdon who must traverse through several untrustworthy characters in order to save the world. Besides a story that looks packed with fascinating stuff on paper, the film does little by way of making it cinematically effective. It plays out rather blandly and methodically, and while there's always something going on, it gives you little reason to keep your attention invested. The biggest problem is the fact that it's structured like a puzzle, much like The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons were, but that makes little sense because there's barely anything in the film apart from unlocking the answers.

The dynamics between the characters are uninteresting, the action scenes are shot in an uninspired fashion and the twists barely surprise you. The only modicum of fun to be had here is in Irrfan Khan's performance, who throws his punchline with a certain awareness that this film needs an element of humour to it.

Even while he's far from the top of his game, he's the only thing in the movie that manages to rise above the material.
