    Verdict - Charming

The Jungle BookWatch trailerRelease date : April 08, 2016

The Jungle Book is the U2 of books to screen..every generation has had their Jungle Book/U2 story and its not like the charm will ever wane off. And then there are all the detractors.

The Jungle Book's India story may have started out with the nanny state deciding that the film was too scary for the kids to watch on their own as" 3D effects are so scary that the animals seem to jump right at the audience" which might unneerve the younger ones considering they spend most of their days trying to dodge those other urban monsters who too are trying to get them (which of course made me think of a Jungle Book tribute where a speeding jaguar could be a Jaguar, hmm). Anyways the whole *snigger* *snigger* look at India being so overprotective and interfering is kind of rich considering Walt Disney had found the original draft for the 1967 Jungle Book film too dark for nice, American families and wanted something wholesome. Pahlaj Nihalani and his ilk are just wrapping up unfinished business. Ironically we all agree that it is a jungle out there but could we make it a bit more family friendly?

I feel that the current avatar of The Jungle Book tries to channel the ominious and forbidding voice mixed with a child's wide eyed wonder that Kipling's work had. And Sher Khan just brings the jungle in rather than it being a 2D3N package with hot, running water other tributes may have been (or what Nihalani and Disney may have wished for us). There was a brief moment when I felt they were doing a Aakhri Pasta with King Louie; but lets not get into the whole Italian-Jazz Singer-Orngautaun transplanted in South East Asian Temple in Indian Jungle trope. I spot a Peace Rock here and want all of us ferocious and feeble to partake of this film's precocious moments equally.

My favourite moments are with the full mazaa languid charms of Bhaloo , he may have been more at peace sipping mint juleps on a porch somewhere so much Southern charm and artfulness right there Mr Bill Murray. Somehow that particular chapter just got the' fun amongst fear, you can still laugh while Sher Khan and peril awaits on the horizon' interlude right.

Neel Sethi as Mowgli is brilliant, but then we all knew that right? He is intelligent and delightful and well for me he is Mowgli--New York boy flitting between Lokhandwala Complex grandparents and that other urban jungle. Working with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson may be a walk in the (nature) park for him then.

Should you watch the latest avatar of The Jungle Book. Oh please do. Will it stay with you? That only time will tell. Im still going to imagine Mowgli as that cheeky boy in 2D lines and color and sinister will be George Sanders. Whether it is a Sher Khan's "Is ilaaqe mai naye ho sahab...varna Sher Khan ko kaun nahi jaanta" or a Shere Khan's "Oh please dont insult my intelligence, it makes me irritable" and "And you should know that everyone runs from Shere Khan" I have always been a Khan girl.Other than an onimous rendition of a cuckoo's tale as a bedtime story; Shere Khan doesnt conjure as many quote worthy moments here. All very well that Nihalini is playing spoiler here.
