Verdict - A spy-movie pastiche that's definitely likable, if not entirely satisfying.

Director Paul Feig's 'Spy' is a delectably subversive but a little too convenient pastiche of the spy thriller subgenre. The wonderfully loony opening scene sets up the tone for what's to come - Feig concocts up brilliant scenarios such as a spy accidentally killing a terrorist mastermind because he, umm, sneezes. And even before we're properly introduced to the protagonist Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy), Feig keeps throwing at us hilariously absurd moments such as the one where it's revealed that a suave, 007-like male spy (Jude Law) has to carry his medication around even when he's taking on typical bad guys. Sadly, Feig's treatment is a little too restrained and timid and moments which could have been profoundly silly are never allowed to blossom fully. Melissa McCarthy is undoubtedly the star here, with the film drawing easy identification from us thanks to her character's goofy ordinaryness. Like many Hollywood films of late, feminist undercurrents abound here too (I'm not complaining at all) but I found the film curiously held back instead of letting the absurdity take over entirely. I came out with a feeling that 'Spy' was a much better idea on paper than it's a film on screen, but that doesn't mean it's entirely worthless. It's decent fun, which is somewhat of a letdown because it could have been an absolute riot.
