    Pather Panchali writer Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's 118th birth anniversary celebrated

    The 118th birth anniversary of noted writer Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, whose iconic novelPather Panchaliwas made into an Oscar winning film by legendary director Satyajit Ray, was celebrated yesterday by the West Bengal government. On the occasion, a programme was held at the state secretariat which was attended by noted dignitaries and the daughter-in-law and grandsons of the late author. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "We will never forget the true picturisation of rural Bengal inPather Panchali- especially the scene where Apu and Durga were rushing with their curious eyes to see, for the first time, a train passing through the village." She added, "As a plain and simple person, he grew up in abject poverty but his indomitable spirit of writing went on successfully along with his career as a teacher". Other famous novels of the author, who died in 1950, areAparajito, Apur Sansar, Baksa BadalandAmar Prem.
