Midhun Manuel Thomas is a talent to look out for. He is the screenwriter of last year's blockbuster rom-com Ohm Shanti Oshana. Aadu Oru Bheegara Jeeviyanu is his directorial debut. It's largely disappointing but we can see flashes of a genius here and there. Aadu gets off to a really good start, with an opening narrative by Mammukoya that remind us of Salim Kumar's opening lines in Ohm Shanti Oshana. Shaji Pappan and his team called "Winners" win the annual tug of war competition of Pothunmukku and receive a goat as the grand prize. Pappan is disappointed for they get a nanny goat instead of a male one they were promised. He and his team of "Winners" decide to take the goat to a hotel where they plan to slaughter it for a barbecue. But what was planned as a casual night trip to hotel turns into a life-turning journey for Pappan and his team. The movie is filled with some genuinely funny gags but they all get trumped by more tasteless ones and so by the time the credits roll, we forget how the movie tickled us much through the first half. For a debut director, Manuel Thomas has done a good job. The screenplay could have been revised and shortened and some unnecessary unfunny subplots like that of animal rights activist Menaka could have been avoided. It wouldn't have made any difference even if a few characters from the "Winners" team were removed. The funniest person on the screen was definitely Dharmarajan. He seemed so effortless in pulling those one-liners and him along with Vinayakan and Jayasurya made the otherwise amateurish script look a bit funny. You can still sense the potential of the brain behind the spoofs, even though Aadu is terribly confused with its numerous subplots. It felt like the movie would have fared well as a good comedy entertainer had he chucked out some annoying characters like Lolan and Shameer. Acting performances of Vijay Babu and Hari Narayan Krishna were particularly disappointing and some of the parts in the movie felt repetitive and boring. Camera was okay, the slow-motion bullet scene in the end was really good but editing was a huge disappointment. In many scenes, especially in the ones towards the end, the crew, lights and equipment were clearly visible through Vinayakan's shades; such bloopers could have been avoided. Aju Varghese, Srinda Ashab, Renji Panicker, Indhrans and Sunny Wayne all made brief appearances and were good in them. High hopes on Midhun Manuel Thomas. I'm waiting for his next movie, let this pass.
