Take the storyline of ‘Malamaal Weekly’, set it against the fictional village of ‘Thenmavin Kombathu’ and you’ll get ‘Aamayum Muyalum’.
Except that this time, there is no quirky comedy or natural grace to thug our heartstrings like those good ol' Priyadarshan movies. With a brilliant cast ensemble made up of the doyens of Malayalam cinema- old and new, a tested script and a rockstar director at the wheel, one might think that ‘Aamayum Muyalum’ is just the perfect comedy gala to lap up on a Christmas time. But unfortunately, it’s not. In fact this one turns out quiet vile because it tricks us into placing high expectations at first with an initial narrative by Mohanlal, an opening sequence similar to ‘Thenmavin Kombathu’, stunning visuals (kudos to R. Diwakar) and classic vignettes of a cross cultured country landscape- again similar to ‘Thenmavin Kombathu’. But the charm fades too quickly once we enter the plot and from there, the story drags monotonously through familiar lines for 163 minutes and ends flat in a whimper.
When lottery dealer Kashi (Nedumudi Venu) discovers that someone in the village who bought his ticket has won the prize money of 5 crore rupees, he sets out to track down and con the lucky man. On his way, he is compelled to add Nallavan (Innocent) with him but certain turn of events forces him to add more people in his pursuit and together they go about searching ways to seize the fortune. In the meantime, the evil village landlady- Bhandaramma (Sukanya) and her kinky brother Mayilappa (Harisree Ashokan) bring major setbacks in the quest along with the romance between Kallu (Jayasurya) and Nallavan’s daughter Thamara (Pia Bajpayee).
While one can get a dejavu listening to M G Sreekumar’s voice and back ground scores reminiscent of the 90s, this film certainly isn't the one to salvage the wreck brought about by the recent ‘Geethanjali’ on Priyadarshan’s film making repute.
