During an interview with BBC News India, Aamir Khan spoke about the possible consequences if Laapataa Ladies, produced by him, wins at the Oscars. The actor stated that India would go ‘'ballistic' if they win and that winning the prestigious Academy Award would create more opportunities for the film.
He said, "I am not quite sure how seriously to take a competition. But I would be really happy. It would create a tremendous opportunity for the film to be seen by a lot more people because when a film wins an Oscar or Academy award, then people from around the world want to see what it’s like. So it opens a huge window of opportunity for a larger audience for a film."
Aamir added that Indians have been wanting an Indian film to win at the Academy Awards which has not happened yet. He stated, "I think Indians are so film crazy and we have been dying to win an Academy Award for an Indian film which hasn’t happened till now. So the country would go ballistic. They’ll just go mad if we win. So just for the people of our country, I’d be very happy if we win the award."
Previously, Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan have been nominated in the International Feature category at the Oscars though none of them won the award. At the 95th Academy Awards in 2023, RRR won the Best Original Song and Elephant Whisperers won the Best Documentary Short.
