Interestingly, Kareena Kapoor Khan ’s husband and actor Saif Ali Khan , actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Kangana Ranaut were originally cast in the film which is based on Japanese author Keigo Higashino’s book, Devotion of Suspect X. Even media reported that among Katrina Kaif , Jacqueline Fernandes and Vidya Balan , one may be finalised to play the lead part before Kareena bagged the part.

While Kangana in an interview with a news portal in February 2015, had said that she’s considering the project, later she decided not to sign up due to certain reasons. “I’m not sure if I can walk out of a project I am not committed to. I haven’t signed a contract and there’s no commitment made from my side,” she had said according to Bollywood Hungama .

Also, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was also in talks with Sujoy Ghosh as per media reports in May 2015. She had confirmed during Cannes Film Festival that she was doing a film with the filmmaker. Even Vidyut Jammwal was reported to be in talks for the second male lead. But he had declined the part citing, “It did sound interesting, it wasn't a genre I saw myself in, to be honest,” he is quoted by Bollywood Hungama to have said.

To note, Sujoy has been trying to work on this project for almost 9 years. There were also murmurs at some point in time that the filmmaker had asked producer Ekta Kapoor to double the budget, which was supposed to be Rs. 20 crore. However, he had denied any such developments. Meanwhile, the upcoming movie has been pushed to next year.
