83: Bombay High Court rejects the plea to hold the OTT streaming of the Ranveer Singh starrer, film to stream on Disney+ Hotstar from 21st March

    The Bombay High Court has rejected the plea for the hold on the OTT release of the Ranveer Singh starrer 83. The movie's rights have been granted to platforms like Netflix and Hotstar.

    Ranveer Singh ’s film 83 has got some relief after the Bombay High Court announced its verdict regarding the broadcasting rights of the film. The Court rejected the plea to hold the OTT release of the film. The Court’s judgment stated that the movie can now be released on streaming platforms like Hotstar and Netflix .

    The Bombay High Court has also approved the exploitation rights of Reliance Entertainment Studios Pvt. Ltd. A news report in India Today stated that the bench of Justice Riyaz Chagla had heard the plea of Mad Man Film Ventures against Reliance Entertainment Studios and the other producers of 83. The plea was regarding the exploitation of digital media and satellite rights by Netflix and Star India.

    The reports further stated that the Mad Man Film Ventures had stated that the ownership of the intellectual property was divided between them wherein both the parties had 37.5 % ownership. Along with Reliance Entertainment Studios Pvt. Ltd and Mad Man Film Ventures, other producers of the Ranveer Singh starrer ie Vibr i Media Pvt. Ltd had 25% ownership in the light of the consent terms. However, the OTT platforms argued that they had been granted rights through the agreements that were not under challenge and were much prior in time to the consent terms between Reliance and Mad Man.

    According to the reports, they furthermore argued that the contractual rights of Mad Man would only begin after 10 years and till then, Reliance Entertainment Studios Pvt. Ltd. has all the rights of 83 for 10 years after its theatrical release. After hearing the same, Justice Riyaz Chagla stated that Star India and Netflix have the satellite and digital rights of 83 and Mad Man cannot claim the intellectual property of the film before 10 years.
