Ajay Devgn could have been the lead in Laxmii years before Akshay Kumar but he refused to wear a saree

Akshay Kumar starrer horror comedy Laxmii may not have worked as well at the makers might have expected it to but the movie did garner a lot of buzz seeing the Bollywood star don a saree, bindi bangle and perform dance and fight sequences wearing it.

The film also marked actor Tusshar Kapoor’s debut as a film producer in Bollywood and the milestone finds a mention in his new book which is about being a single parent. The Laxmii producer has revealed in the book about how he had decided to remake the 2011 Tamil film Kanchana back in 2013 and even secured the rights according to Bollywood Hungama .

Tusshar had apparently approached Ajay Devgn to play the lead which was eventually played by Akshay Kumar. In the book the actor turned producer has also mentioned how after agreeing to be a part of the film, the leading man apparently walked away from the project feeling a ‘certain disconnect with their characters and roles in the script.’

The report further states that Ajay apparently had issues wearing a saree in the climax of the film and decided to drop out. The project was then tabled by Tusshar who then on boarded Akshay for the Raghava Lawrence directed film in 2018.

Ajay has not been named in the book by Tusshar but the actor had in 2013 confirmed that the actor was the leading man he had signed for the Kanchana remake.

Akshay in the movie can be seen possessed by the ghost of a transgender Laxmii who is out for revenge against the people who murdered her. Laxmii is shown to be played by actor Sharad Kelkar who also earned accolades for his performance.

The movie finally released in 2020 on Disney + Hostar and even ended on a note that leaves room for a sequel however, the movie didn’t impress the audience beyond Akshay’s drastic make-over and Sharad’s sincere performance.
