Badhaai Do: Filmmaker Onir celebrates Rajkummar Rao playing a gay cop days after his film on gay soldier gets rejected

Filmmaker Onir took to social media celebrating the trailer of Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar ’s Badhaai Do which is a comedy set on a lavender marriage. The film dealing with two homosexual protagonists has Rajkummar playing a cop while Bhumi is a physical education teacher.

The filmmaker who only days ago made headlines for being refused to make a film on a gay solider took to Twitter and wrote about Badhaai Do: “At least Some in Uniform can be shown as homosexual. Looking forward to what looks like a fun film directed by #HarshavardhanKulkarni. Congratulations @RajkummarRao @bhumipednekar for stepping into and celebrating the beautiful Queer. #PRIDE”

Badhaai Do is about a 31-year-old woman whose family won’t leave her back about getting married while she is in a relationship with another woman. She accepts a cop’s proposition to marry him as he knows she like women and promises they’d only live as roommates. The trailer ends with a potential reveal that the man is also gay.

Films based on homosexuality are becoming more and more common in Bollywood and Badhaai Do is another addition to the list. The movie continues the franchise which started with Ayushmann Khurrana ’s Badhaai Ho in 2018. The movie was about a middle aged couple with two grown up kids discovering they are pregnant and how it impacts the family.

The filmmaker’s script about a gay solider was inspired by the true story of gay Major J. Suresh who left the army because his sexual orientation. The project was titled We Are and the Defense Ministry rejected Onir’s script leading him to question how something that has happened for real can be declined.

Onir has been hailed for powerful story telling about same sex relationships with previous films like My Brother Nikhil and I Am.
