Diljit Dosanjh to play late Amar Singh Chamkila in Imtiaz Ali helmed biopic

    Not Ranbir Kapoor or Ayushmann Khurrana but singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh has been finalised to play the titular role of Imtiaz Ali's upcoming biopic on late Punjabi folk singer Amar Singh Chamkila.

    Singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh has been roped in to essay the role of late Punjabi folk singer Amar Singh Chamkila in an upcoming biopic which will be helmed by Imtiaz Ali .

    Known for depicting complex relationships in films like Tamasha , Rockstar among others, Imtiaz for the first time will direct a biopic depicting the life of late folk singer Amar Singh Chamkila, who became popular in Punjab with the stage name Chamkila.

    Earlier speculations were made about actors Ranbir Kapoor , Ayushmann Khurrana , and Kartik Aaryan playing the titular role. However, the makers wanted an actor who can sing as well and can immediately imbibe the role as reported by a tabloid. Hence, Punjabi superstar Diljit was approached for the iconic role. The actor immediately came onboard considering Chamkila as his inspiration in the music industry. He will also reportedly croon some of Chamkila’s original songs for the film.

    The film will be produced under Imitiaz’s production banner Window Seat Films in association with Reliance Entertainment . It is being reported that the director has acquired the rights to make the film and has been regularly visiting Chamkila's son Jaiman Chamkila's residence in Ludhiana over the last year.

    The film is touted to be a blend of facts and fiction narrating Chamkila's love life, controversies, music, and assassination. As per reports, Imtiaz has been developing this project since 2019. He has completed scripting and modified the script over time. It is also being reported that he has ensured to make it a commercial affair. The yet-to-be-titled film is finally set to take it to the floors this year.

    Talking about Diljit, he was last seen in the Punjabi film Honsla Rakh and Hindi film Good Newwz. The actor is currently gearing up for his music tour in India after dropping his album Moonchild, last year.
