Downton Abbey: A New Era star Hugh Bonneville doesn't think there will be a third installment in the franchise but is still open to returning

Downton Abbey is one of the most popular and beloved TV series in recent times. The brainchild of Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes the series is set in the fictional county of Yorkshire country estate.

Set between 1912 and 1926, depicts the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their domestic servants in the post-Edwardian era.

After the end of the series, the show made a sucessfull jump into movies carrying on the storyline with the 2019 movie.

Which would go on to gross over 190 million dollars worldwide and got a sequel this year called Downton Abbey: A New Era .

In a recent interview, one of the stars of the movie Hugh Booneville who plays the role of Lord Gartham talked about the potential of a third movie.

While the first movie was a critical and commercial success the sequel A New Era did not cause much of an impact at the box office but received positive reviews.

Despite show creator Julian Fellows expressing interest in making a third movie, Booneville expressed his doubts but is open to returning if the rest of the cast are also included.

The actor also talked about a few ideas for where the next movie will go with the story.

In the interview with ScreenRant Hugh Booneville had this to see about he future of the franchise

"This is a fictional world, because I don't think there will be another one. I was thinking for a while that [there] would be; we're all up for it, and let's go. But I think it's probably run its course now. And it's been a fantastic 12 years on and off that we've visited this family. But I think probably enough is enough."

"Were it to carry on, I don't know where it would go next. On the basis that each of the last few iterations has been roughly taking place in a year, or during a year, we'd be in 1929. What happens then? It's the Wall Street crash, and the gaiety of the 20s is going to come crashing to a halt. So, it'd be pretty potentially pretty gloomy. I don't know. And as for Robert? Well, he's gonna die. So, a good death would be good."

IF a third movie is made it will probably focus on the era before the start of the Second World War or maybe the war itself. Only time will tell if we have seen the last of Downton Abbey.
