Jersey box office collection Day 1: Shahid Kapoor's sports drama records slow start with Rs 3.7-4 crore nett

Despite critics’ positive reviews, Shahid Kapoor starrer sports drama Jersey opened to an average collection at the box office. According to early estimates, the film earned Rs 4 crore, but according to box office reports, the film had witnessed low footfall in theatres.

The much-anticipated sports drama was finally released in theatres on April 22 after multiple delays due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, the film is an official Hindi remake of the Telugu film of the same name. It stars Shahid Kapoor in the role of a cricketer who takes the decision to return to the field at the age of 40 in order to earn his son's respect. The film also stars Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapur in pivotal roles.

With so much buzz around its release, Jersey was expected to do well on its opening day with estimates ranging from Rs 6 to 7 crores. However, the film business has been dubbed disastrous on opening day and has also shut down all prospects for the film. From here on, it seems difficult to even hit a total of Rs 40 crores in the long term.

As per Box Office India reports, “Jersey had a low opening day of around 3.75-4 crore nett and the collections of the film did not jump much in the evening. Obviously, they were better than compared to the morning and afternoon shows but they did not propel the film to a higher level which was needed as the start was low. Again this film will be another test for the box office as its a Saturday film but post the pandemic these type have found it tough going.”

Meanwhile, Jersey has received positive feedback from critics. They appreciated Shahid’s role in the emotional sports drama. Even at the film screening, director Gowtam Tinnanuri earned a standing ovation. The film is produced by Allu Entertainment , Dil Raju Production, Sithara Entertainments, and Brat Films.
