Jhund trailer: Amitabh Bachchan fights the odds to teach football to slums kids; promises a moving drama

Amitabh Bachchan brings to life the story of social worker Vijay Barse whose efforts at transforming the lives of underprivileged kids through football are in the focus in National Award winning filmmaker Nagraj Manjule.

The film titled Jhund finally revealed its trailer today and Amitabh Bachchan seems to be only one who can see potential in a bunch slum kids while the world around them simply wants to keep them out of sight and out of mind.

In 2001, Vijay Barse started the non-profit Slum Soccer at the age of 73 in Nagpur where the film has also been shot. The former sports teacher’s initiative had as many as 128 slum children participate in a local tournament which over the years grew into an district level, state and then a national level tournament with as many as 15 states participating. The tournament today helps selects the team which will represent the country in the Homeless Soccer World Cup internationally.

Big B plays Basre in the biographical drama, a sports teacher who invites slum kids to his college to train them in football. In several scenes away from his tutorship, these kids seem to be stirring up various kinds of trouble but it doesn’t really keep Amitabh’s character from believing in them.

From rallying for permission to let them play on college grounds to standing up for them when no one would, Amitabh Bachchan’s character can be seen fighting the odds to see what he sees in the slum kids.

The trailer teases tones of comedy, emotion and drama but it is the making of an inspirational figure that is to watch out for. Amitabh Bachchan promises to deliver a moving tale by lending his star persona to a common man’s journey and his simple yet effective portrayal is definitely the highlight of the trailer.

“Aap kehte hain ki yejhud hai, main kehta hoon ki yeh humari national football team hai,” the final dialogue from the trailer effectively summaries what Vijay Barse’s vision which is also the guiding principle of Manjule’s film.

Jhund is headed for cinemas on March 4, 2022.
