Ponniyin Selvan 2 is still going strong at the box office, having collected an impressive 10 crores at the end of its 10th day.

The movie has currently grossed around 280 cores worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing movie of 2023.

As the movie inches closer to the 300crore club it is clear that it lacks the same momentum that Ponniyin Selvan 1 had during its box office run.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 was a huge critical and commercial success becoming the highest-grossing Tamil movie of 2022 and the fifth highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time with a total box office collection of 500 crores.

The movies are based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel, Ponniyin Selvan, Which focuses on the Chola dynasty specifically Rajaraja Chola and his rise to power.

It remains to be seen if Ponniyin Selvan 2 will be able to beat the record set by Part 1, but changes look slim. However, there is still a chance for the movie to take the spot of the second highest-grossing movie of the year from Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu.

The movie received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike when it hit theaters last week.

The OTT rights of Part 2 were sold for a whopping 125 crores to streaming giant Amazon Prime Video and the movie is expected to stream on the platform this July.

The franchise was long thought to be unadaptable for the big screen with countless stars and producers trying and failing over the years including MGR and Kamal Hassan.

Official movie production started on December 11, 2019, in Thailand with a budget of 500 crores, and both Part 1 and Part 2 were shot back to back. Production wrapped on March 2022.

Ponniyin Selven boasts of an ensemble main cast that includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Prabhu.
