Ponniyin Selvan 2 Box Office: Mani Ratnam's epic conclusion to the Chola saga is going strong at the box office but still can't catch upto PS-1.

    At the end of its fifth day, the epic conclusion to the Chola dynasty's saga has grossed an impressive 230 crores worldwide.

    The movie received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike when it hit theaters last week, however, the movie still lags behind its predecessor, which collected a whopping 300 crores at the end of five days.

    Ponniyin Selvan 1 was a huge critical and commercial success becoming the highest-grossing Tamil movie of 2022 and the fifth highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time with a total box office collection of 500 crores.

    The OTT rights of Part 2 were sold for a whopping 125 crores to streaming giant Amazon Prime Video and the movie is expected to stream on the platform this July.

    Official movie production started on December 11, 2019, in Thailand with a budget of 500 crores, and both Part 1 and Part 2 were shot back to back. Production wrapped on March 2022.

    The movies are based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel, Ponniyin Selvan, Which focuses on the Chola dynasty specifically Rajaraja Chola and his rise to power.

    The franchise was long thought to be unadaptable for the big screen with countless stars and producers trying and failing over the years including MGR and Kamal Hassan.

    Veteran director Mani Ratnam has been trying for years to get the movie made and finally got the project in motion in 2019.

    Ponniyin Selvan 2 clocks in at two hours and thirty-seven minutes, and whole ten minutes shorter than Part 1.

    The music for the movie is composed by A.R. Rahman and the first single titled Aga Nga has crossed over 18 million views on Youtube in less than two weeks.

    Ponniyin Selven boasts of an ensemble main cast that includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Prabhu.

    The supporting cast includes R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman, R. Parthiban, Babu Anthony, Lal, Riyaz Khan, and Nassar.
