Shahid Kapoor on Jersey’s clash with KGF Chapter 2: ‘It is an action film; we are very much a family film’

After watching Shahid Kapoor as the intense Kabir Singh, fans are eagerly waiting to see him play the role of a family man and cricketer in his next film Jersey . But sadly the waiting period is just not coming to an end! The sports drama, also starring Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapur , was initially set to arrive in theatres on 31st December but was postponed indefinitely just a few days before release. The next decided date was 14th April but yesterday the makers announced that the release has been pushed to next week for 22nd April.

With this new release date, Jersey has avoided a major clash at the box office with Thalapathy Vijay ’s action thriller Beast and Yash starrer period action film KGF Chapter 2. Talking about the clash in a chat with India Today, Shahid shared, “We obviously have thought it through. Everybody thinks its prudent. It’s a big holiday. A lot of big films can be released on a holiday and I think Beast is largely for a different market. And KGF 2 is an action film. We are very much a family film. So, the genres are very different. So, yeah, we think its okay.”

His co-star Mrunal explained that because of the coronavirus pandemic, it has been two years since the public has had a chance to go to theatres and enjoy. So now that the situation is better, they are spoiling the audience for choice! Shahid couldn’t agree more. He added, “Yeah and all big holidays have 2 big films. 2 ya 3 aati hain usually. So, it's okay. Yeh hamesha se hota hain. Hamesha same sawaal hota hain. But, it's always good to have more films during the holidays because people are stepping out more.”

Helmed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, Jersey is the Hindi remake of the filmmaker’s Telugu sports drama of the same name. It follows the story of a man who had quit cricket, but decides to make a comeback and play for the Indian national team at the age of 36 to fulfill his son’s dream of having a jersey.

Which film would you have chosen to watch first if the clash was not avoided-- Jersey, Beast or KGF Chapter 2?
