Shamshera trailer: Ranbir Kapoor as dacoit takes ruthless avatar when Daroga Shuddh Singh aka Sanjay Dutt enslaves his tribe

After infinite delays, the much-awaited trailer of Ranbir Kapoor starrer Shamshera has finally been unveiled. Directed by Karan Malhotra , the film also stars Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor in pivotal roles. Produced by Aditya Chopra ’s Yash Raj Films , the film is slated to have pan-India release in theatres on July 22.

Set in the city of Kaza in the 1800s, the trailer introduces Shamshera(Ranbir) as a flamboyant leader of a team of dacoits under the British government. The dancer( Vaani Kapoor) warns Shamshera of his wrongdoings. Later, he is pitted against the authoritarian general Shuddh Singh(Sanjay Dutt) who works for the government and has kept his warrior tribe imprisoned and enslaved. Shamshera then becomes a legend as he fights relentlessly for his tribe’s freedom in this larger-than-life storytelling.

Ahead of the trailer launch, Ranbir became emotional. He wished his father had been alive, he would have been very happy to see Ranbir in Shamshera.“I wish Papa was alive to see this film. He has always been frankly honest about his criticism, if he liked or didn't like something, especially with my work,” he said.

Talking about the film, Karan told Variety that Shamshera is a classic Hindi cinema experience of 2022-23. “It definitely brings the Indian hero back and it also brings the Indian villain back in a big way. But, it has been crafted in a way where you do not feel that you’re watching old wine in a new bottle. ‘Shamshera’ will come across as a genre of its own,” he told the publication.

The film will see Ranbir sharing the screen space with Sanjay for the first time since he played Sanjay in his biopic Sanju. Talking about the casting coup, Sanjay said that it will be quite interesting for the audience to watch him pitted against Ranbir. “The on-screen enmity between him and me becomes all the more interesting for people. Ranbir is a brilliant actor but this film sees him in a new gaze. His boyish charm is inimitable, but in this film, he is a man who finds his footing and looks glorious on screen,” he said.
