S.S. Rajamouli elevated the standards of Indian cinemas with Baahubali and now all eyes are on the filmmaker as he returns almost five years later with his new project RRR.

Needless to say that the hype around RRR which is huge, and with stars like Jr. NTR, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt fronting the project the appeal is gets heightened much more.

The filmmaker got candid about his casting choices in RRR in a recent interview with ETimes and revealed why he roped in Bollywood stars Ajay and Alia Bhatt for the project. Calling Ajay’s character the soul of the movie, S.S. Rajamouli said that he wanted an actor who could express emotions with their eyes.

“The character of Ajay sir is the soul of the film. He has to contain a lot of emotions and express them with his eyes. There should be honesty in his face, in the character and I found the answer in Ajay Devgn sir,” the RRR director said.

While details of Ajay Devgn’s role are still in wraps days ahead of the film’s arrival in cinemas, we do see him briefly in the trailer dressed as a dacoit.

Alia Bhatt plays Sita in the film who is paired opposite Ram Charan’s Alluri Sitarama Raju. Talking about casting for the particular role, Rajamouli said that he wanted someone ‘fragile’. However the filmmaker added that despite casting her in a ‘glass-like doll’ kind of character Alia is nothing like the role she plays.

“In Alia, I wanted a very soft, fragile, glass-like doll but actually, she is not like that at all. She is a diamond. She is so strong that she can contain the two super forces and bring them together.”

In another interview, S.S. Rajamouli clarified that he didn’t cast these two Bollywood stars because of any economic factors to help RRR or gain the attention of the Hindi speaking audience but simply because they are good actors.

RRR arrives in cinemas on January 7, 2022.
