Sweet Dreams is a step away from the typical tropes of rom-com, says Victor Mukherjee | EXCLUSIVE
He came, he ‘made a film’ and he conquered the hearts of many- would be just the right and apt way to introduce the filmmaker Victor Mukherjee, who won everyone’s attention with the action-thriller animal vigilante film Lakadbaggha (starring Anshuman Jha and Ridhi Dogra). For all those who were eagerly waiting to know about his next film, well… the film that he is making is Sweet Dreams… a film that is about …. Well…why don’t you hear it from the horse’s mouth!
Here’s presenting DesiMartini’s exclusive interview with the man himself Victor Mukherjee, wherein he reveals all about his most awaited next film Sweet Dreams!
Victor, to start with… you are someone who is known for your action-packed debut with Lakadbaggha. Just as when many expected you to follow it up with its sequel, you shifted gears to a romantic comedy like Sweet Dreams’ as your second film. Any specific reason to do so?
To tell you the fact, my film Lakadbaggha was a challenging and fulfilling experience. But, the fact always remains that I have always been drawn to stories that explore the human condition in different ways.
My second film ‘Sweet Dreams’ presented an opportunity to delve into the complexities of love and relationships, to showcase a different side of my storytelling abilities. In the same breath, let me also add that I believe in the power of stories that can make people laugh, cry, and ultimately, feel something deeply. Also, its been long since a light romantic comedy was released.
Your film Sweet Dreams seems to have a unique take on the romantic comedy genre. Can you tell us a bit about what sets it apart from the others?
I had always been wanting to move away from the typical tropes and cliches often associated with rom-coms. My film Sweet Dreams explores the gap between our idealized notions of love and the reality of finding genuine connections. It's a film about self-discovery, about learning to appreciate the beauty of unexpected love, and about letting go of societal expectations.
Please continue…
I would actually call it a romantic fantasy rather than a romantic comedy, because It also delves in between the fantasy world between dream and reality, which always has fascinated me, and the base of the story is about a recurring dream I’ve had where I saw a certain person every day in my dreams.
What was the biggest challenge you faced while directing Sweet Dreams?
Honestly speaking, finding the right balance between head and heart. Romantic comedies can sometimes lean too heavily on one or the other. We wanted to create a film that was both light and emotionally resonant, a film that would stay with the audience long after the credits rolled.
There are some subtle hints of issues that Gen Z is going through right now. So, to put all of these together in a script and then finish the shoot in only 21 days, keeping the lightness of it intact, was the biggest challenge!
Besides the unique title, what also magnetizes everyone’s interest and attention is the cast of the film Sweet Dreams. What was your experience of working with the likes of Amol Parashar, Mithila Palkar, Meiyang Chang and Sauraseni Maitra and others?
Oh! It was an absolute joy. They are all incredibly talented and dedicated actors. They brought such depth and nuance to their characters, elevating the film to another level. The chemistry between them was totally undeniable, which was also very crucial for a film like this. Also, I wanted to get unlikely pairs on board, which this film successfully did!
What message do you hope audiences take away from Sweet Dreams?
One of the best messages that the film gives out is that love can be found in the most unexpected places and that it is important to be open to new experiences, to embrace vulnerability, and to cherish the genuine connections we make with others.
Let me also add that, the other message that the movie gives out is that, more than anything, you will only be able to love freely, when you start loving yourself. We always tend to get stuck sometimes in a loop, and for reasons unknown, we don’t try to break the loop. Breaking a loop is very important!
What are your future plans as a filmmaker?
I am presently exploring diverse stories and genres. I'm drawn to projects that challenge me creatively and that have the potential to make a lasting impact on audiences. Currently, I have just wrapped up writing a romantic tragedy, a supernatural thriller, another romantic comedy, and a nostalgic drama, and I can't wait to share them with the world soon!
Iam so eagerly waiting for everyone's feedback about my film Sweet Dreams, which releases on Disney + Hotstar on January 24.
