Bollywood mourns death of ace filmmaker Ravi Chopra

The Hindi film industry suffered a major setback yesterday when veteran filmmaker and producer Ravi Chopra passed away of ailing lung cancer, he was 68. The poignant news came by the evening taking each one in the film fraternity by shock and sorrow. Ravi as a director had helmed quite a few popular Hindi movies with big stars. His absence would certainly make a lot of hearts grief.

Ravi Chopra was the only son to legendry filmmaker B.R. Chopra and was born on 27th September 1946. While his father was a legend in himself, his uncle Yash Chopra and cousins Aditya and Uday Chopra are all famous names of the film industry. Ravi in a career span of almost 40 years directed some of the most wonderful films but the hugest credit to his name has always been the epic TV serial Mahabharat. Mahabharat, which is by far the most popular and most viewed television series in India not only made Ravi what he was but also stated his magnanimity as a filmmaker. Ravi Chopra had also directed the 1980 blockbuster The Burning Train. While the younger generation knows him for helming the emotional Baghban starring Big B and Hema Malini, the director last made Baabul in 2006.

Ravi was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2012 and had been battling it out since then. According to an internet report “He was at the Breach Candy hospital while also getting his treatment from CMC Vellore. He passed away on 12 November 2014 in Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai where he was admitted few days ago for lung ailment.”

While all members of the industry mourned his death, friend and colleague Sr. Bachchan brought his thoughts on Twitter by posting “It is the time in life when you do not make friends, but lose them.” With the kind of loved cinema and TV that Ravi Chopra made, all we can say is we’ve lost a wonderful gem and a true person at heart. That’s a dent not so easy to be filled.
