Confirmed: An R-Rated Hellboy movie reboot is happening!

Yes, you heard it right! Hellboy creator Mike Mignola took to Facebook to announce plans to reboot the Hellboy movie franchise, and this time in an R-Rated format. What makes this announcement even more interesting is the actor who has been cast as the new Hellboy. (*drumroll*) David Harbour of the Stranger Things series will be starring as the demon, and taking the reigns as the director will be Neil Marshall , known for hit shows such as Game of Thrones and The Descent.

Confirming the news, The Hollywood Reporter (THR) revealed that production company Millenium was in negotiations for the reboot, and that neither actor Ron Perlman nor director Guillermo del Toro with will be attached to the project. THR also reported that the producers chose to reboot the franchise after they couldn’t reach a compromise with del Toro over the planned movie’s budget. The working title for the movie is “Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen”.

Who will be cast as the Blood Queen is yet to be revealed but it would be interesting to see how the makers will adapt the character. Known as the The Queen of Blood in the Hellboy universe, she is the greatest of all British witches, having links to sorcerer Merlin himself.

The famous character was originally created in 1993 by Mignola. Hellboy also made it to not one, but two, relatively successful movies— Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy: The Golden Army (2008) —but somehow a third movie never happened despite various efforts by Ron Perlman, who played the character in both movies.
