Dilip Kumar will be shifted out of ICU on Wednesday

Actor Dilip Kumar will be shifted out of the intensive care unit within 24-48 hours, said doctors from Lilavati Hospital. After slipping into a mildly critical stage on Friday, the thespian has almost recovered from his renal ailments and dehydration.

“We have thought of keeping him into observation for a day or two before shifting him out of the ICU. He has made a near complete recovery and his renal functions have improved significantly,” said V Ravishankar, chief executive officer of the hospital.

The doctors said his health started improving from Sunday with a healthy drop in creatinine levels and rise in the potassium levels. “He started passing urine on his own and was also eating on his own,” Ravishankar added.

On Friday, doctors had said that continues ‘derange’ in Kumar’s renal parameters could have been the reason behind his failing health. They had even considered putting him on dialysis had his condition deteriorated further.

A major cause of concern were the actor’s elevated creatinine levels — a sign of kidney problems — and a drop in his blood haemoglobin. The kidneys maintain blood creatinine, but a spike indicates dysfunction or disease.

“The major issue was dehydration. Since it affects kidney and other organs momentarily, he [Kumar] suffered minor urinary issues, otherwise there is no major complication,” said Ravishankar.

The 94-year-old actor has faced several medical complications in the recent years. Kumar was hospitalised last April for fever and nausea. He was again admitted to Lilavati in December for swelling in his right leg.
