Biopics have suddenly become a rage in Bollywood. Right from sportsmen to yesteryear heroes or freedom fighters or even celebs from the industry, the upcoming year will see over a dozen biopics.

Sports biopics will also be made so that the nation gets to know about those unsung and underrated heroes about whom the nation knows very little. The first on the line will probably be Soorma , which will be based on Hockey star Sandeep Singh. Diljit Dosanjh will essay the role of Singh while Angad Bedi will play his elder brother and Taapsee Pannu will also be a part of the film. But what is so special about Sandeep Singh that it has inspired a full-fledged biopic? Well, here’s the answer.

Sandeep Singh and his achievements

Sandeep Singh had entered the International debut in 2004 with Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Kuala Lumpur. But he started coming into the limelight from 2009. The Kurukshetra boy made a huge impact in 2009 where he scored the most goals and won the Man of the Tournament award for Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

He also took over as the Captain of the Indian national team in January 2009. It was under his captaincy that the team won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup after 13 years.

Sandeep, who is known as one of the best drag-flickers, also had a drag speed of 145km/hr, which was said to be the best drag speed at that time.

But the best achievement by Sandeep was his goals against France for the 2012 London Olympics Qualifier. India qualified for the Olympics after a long haul of 8 years and that too with a score of 8-1 against France All thanks to Sandeep Singh, who alone scored five goals, including a hat-trick, all from penalty corners. He was the highest scorer of the Olympic qualifiers tournament by scoring 16 goals.

But what is so special about his achievements?

So many sportsmen have achieved great lengths in their own respective fields. Every sportsman goes through a number of trials and tribulations to reach glory and success. So one might ask what is so special about Sandeep Singh and his achievements.

Well, it is the fact that the drag-flicker was wheelchair bound for almost two years and returned back even better and stronger after his recovery.

Sandeep Singh was accidentally shot in his leg in August 2006 while he was traveling in Shatabdi Express to meet the National Hockey Team. They were to leave for Germany in two days. It was a huge setback since he was not just grievously injured but was also wheelchair bound for 2 years.

It could have meant the end of the sports career for someone who just started two years back. A two-year break, in such condition, could prove detrimental not just to one’s strength and physical ability, but also one’s morale!

But he bounced back after his recovery and proved that he is unstoppable!
