Five years of Vicky Donor: Yami Gautam thought the film's theme was a joke

When actor Yami Gautam went to audition for the film Vicky Donor (2012), she had a hard time believing the story. “The first time I went to give the audition [for Vicky Donor], I asked the casting director what the film was about and she just smiled and said it was based on sperm donation. I thought it was some kind of a joke. I rechecked and asked her to tell me seriously what it was all about. The only thing I heard was that Shoojit Sircar was directing it, and I knew he was a very sensible director,” recalls Yami, who played Ayushmann Khurrana’s love interest in the film.

Although Yami is proud of the character that she played in Vicky Donor, she says that the film’s theme made people nervous initially. “When my dad asked me what the film was about, I gave the script to him, and said, ‘You read it [yourself]’. I didn’t know how to put it across, but they [my family] loved the script and the final film. The best part was that Shoojit knew what he was dealing with and showed through the film that we had progressive minds around us,” adds the actor.

“Whenever I go to Delhi for any event, I am reminded of shooting for Vicky Donor. I used to go for shopping on my own. I remember turning into a foodie, and I always had a memory of Annu Kapoor Ji being very thin from Mr. India (1987) days, but the paunch he has in this film is real and he too is a big foodie,” she says.
