Gipppy Grewal: I feel scared and sceptical before signing Hindi films

Singer-actor Gippy Grewal is a name to reckon with in Punjabi film industry. And now, he’s is all set to make his Bollywood debut in Farhan Akhtar starrer Lucknow Central. Considering the kind of love and adulation Punjabi artists get in Bollywood, Gippy is being hopeful that he, too, will be accepted.

Asked why he chose such an unconventional character of a jail inmate for his Hindi debut, Gippy says, “I have worked I many [Punjabi] films and I felt that Lucknow Central was a bit different from the usual stuff that you see on the big screen. It was certainly out of league.”

Excited to be working with Farhan, who plays the lead role in the film, Gippy adds, “He was another reason why I instantly agreed to do the film. He is such a big artist and has worked in so many different films. So when you get to work with another great artist as your co-star, you get to learn so much in life.”

Gippy shares that ever since he took up this role [in Lucknow Central], he has been getting more offers from Bollywood filmmakers. However, he is not rushing into things and still thinking what next to take up. “It has become a sort of a trend that Punjabi actors are working in mainstream Bollywood films. But I’m not finalising anything right now because I’ve seen many movies with a gross Friday of Rs 1.5 to 2 crore or maximum 5 crore, which is very difficult to achieve in Bollywood, whereas, Punjabi films cross a gross total of 2.50 crore much faster and so much ease.”

I don’t want to get stuck and end up being a part of a film where the gross collection of the film is lesser than my Punjabi films.

Referring to Bollywood films that didn’t do great business at the box-office despite big hype around them, Gippy admit that he feels “scared and sceptical” before signing a new [Hindi] project. “I don’t want to get stuck and end up being a part of a film where the gross collection of the film is lesser than my Punjabi films. I don’t want to be in a situation where, instead of going up in my career, I go through a fall,” says Gippy.

The actor adds that he wants to do films that leave a lasting impact on audience’s mind and his role stands out. “And then, even if the opening weekend is not great, people should remember me as a good actor and as someone, who does amazing work. They understand that because of its storyline, the box office collection will be less but the content was amazing,” opines Gippy.
