Huma Qureshi talks about Cannes red carpet: Bollywood got it right after so many years

Actor Huma Qureshi has come a long way. From being someone who was body-shamed during her initial years in Bollywood to being a fashionista in her own way, Huma has stunned fashion critics with her impeccable style statements. Asked if she saw the outfits the Bollywood actors wore on the red carpet at Cannes this year, Huma says, “Of course! I always look forward to all the red carpet appearances [at Cannes] and I’m always excited to know who is wearing what, especially Bollywood.”

So, who was her favourite among Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor? “Oh, I loved all of them. All of them have been so amazing. Even Shruti Haasan was there and I feel she looked great too. They all looked so beautiful, yet, so different from one another,” says Huma, who attended the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 for her film Gangs of Wasseypur.

While many felt that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan went a bit overboard with her Cinderella-inspired gown or the multi-layered net frock, Huma feels otherwise. “She’s so gorgeous and she’s been coming to Cannes for a long time. I don’t think anyone went over the top this time. Rather, I feel Bollywood has finally got it right after so many years.”

But why is it that only fashion and red carpet outfits make the most noise at an international film festival? “But hasn’t that always been the case” asks Huma. “Cannes somehow has become synonymous with fashion and style—about dressing up. Though our [Bollywood] films do get a chance to be shown there, not as much as Hollywood. I hope we get more opportunities to take Hindi cinema to such a platform and get foreign media to talk about it.”

Actor Shruti Haasan is at Cannes to promote her upcoming film Sanghamitra, while Nandita Das and Nawazuddin Siddiqui are attending the 70th edition of the coveted festival to present their film Manto.
