Unlike a lot of music composers and singers who disapprove of the idea of old songs being reinvented, singer Akhil Sachdeva feels that one should be more open to the idea, as it definitely works.

“My dream, when I’m a big name in the [music] industry, is to recreate Kishoreda’s songs in a Sufi version,” he says, referring to the golden hits of the legendary Kishore Kumar. “I don’t sing from my throat; I sing from my heart. So I’d love to reprise a few of my favourite old songs and give my touch to them,” adds Akhil, who made his Bollywood debut with the track Humsafar in Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya, starring Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt.

The 29-year-old Delhi-based singer contests the belief that an iconic song gets ruined if a new musician reinvents it for a film. “I enjoy most of [the remixes]. The only reason people are trying to do remixes is because these songs are classics. The best part about these songs is that they are soulful and are still liked by the audience,” says Akhil. “People who say we don’t like the new [reinvented] version, they are actually the ones who would want to hear it on loop.”

Akhil, however, asserts that it’s important for a composer and singer to not touch the essence of the original song: “There are things that shouldn’t be touched. One should just remain honest and true to the song, whether it’s a soulful or a peppy number — that has to remain intact.”

Stating that he is not someone who believes in following trends, Akhil adds, “If a particular trend says that put a certain kind of beats, don’t follow it just because it’s working. Follow your heart and make it work. Take it as a great change and you’d enjoy it too.”
