In 30 seconds, Hugh Jackman proves he deserves an Oscar for Logan

After playing the Wolverine in nine films across 17 years, Hugh Jackman bid farewell to the character in director James Mangold’s revisionist superhero film Logan that earned both critical and commercial success. As a peek into the work he put into the performance, Jackman shared a short clip on Twitter on Wednesday that shows the effort he puts into playing the character.

The 30-second clip was shot during one of Jackman’s ADR sessions on the film. In post-production, actors are usually required to dub lines of dialogue that couldn’t be recorded during the shoot. The scene Jackman was dubbing for comes towards the end of the film, when his character slashes his way through several goons as he rushes to protect the ‘gifted’ children they’re after.

It is a brutal scene that ends with a lot of bloodshed. Logan was rated R (the equivalent of our A certificate) on account of its hyper-violent and profane tone. But the truly impressive thing about this clip is that Jackman is delivering a real tour-de-force performance in a scene that requires nothing more than grunts. In just half-a-minute, he transforms into the character, and lets out a blood-curdling growl at the end.

It’s no wonder that his performance is being widely praised, with some (including Ryan Reynolds, The Telegraph and GQ) even speculating that it could attract Oscar attention when the time comes.
