Discrimination on the basis of gender has been prevalent in Hollywood. In 2015, after it was revealed that actor Jennifer Lawrence got paid less than co-stars Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale in American Hustle (2013), Cooper agreed with the disparity and said that he was proud of his co-star Lawrence, for speaking her mind about the pay gap. There have been many actors who have voiced their concerns over this disparity. Here’s taking a look at some of the revelations that shows nothing but Hollywood’s sexist mindset when it comes to paying their female stars.

In 2015, after a hacker leaked Jennifer Lawrence’s nude photos, he also released some of the emails which showed that the Oscar winning actor had received a far less remuneration for her role in American Hustle (2013), as compared to her male co-stars Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale. “When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with d**ks, I didn’t get mad at Sony. I got mad at myself. I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early. I didn’t want to keep fighting over millions of dollars that, frankly, due to two franchises, I don’t need,” she was quoted as saying.

In an interview with Variety, the Oscar winning actor said that she was surprised when she found that she was treated differently because of her gender.“It’s a bigger issue than money. I know we’re focused on the money part right now. That’s just a by-product. I keep saying, ‘Why is it that no one is standing up and saying you can’t say that about a woman?’ We’re mocked and judged in the media and articles,” she was quoted as saying.

Jessica Chastain, the Interstellar (2014) actor agreed with Jennifer Lawrence’s comments on the pay disparity and said that the discrimination had been happening for a long time. “There’s no excuse. There’s no reason why a female star should do a film with other male actors and get paid less. It’s completely unfair. It’s not right. It’s been happening for years now. I think it’s brave to talk about it and everyone should talk about it,” she was quoted as saying by Variety.com.

Stone made a big name for herself in the movie Basic Instinct (1992), but in an interview, the actor revealed that she still got paid so much less than men in Hollywood. “It has to start with regular pay, not just for movie stars, but regular pay for the regular woman in the regular job. It’s a sort of economic blackmail,” she was quoted as saying.

The British-American actor refused to work in play Broadway because she was getting paid less than her male counterparts.“It was a play with just two of us on stage and I was offered less than half of what he was going to be paid. If it was two men, it wouldn’t probably happen. Sad, but I walked away. The only way is to take a stand. We have to make sacrifices to make change. I want to turn up and feel dignified,” she said in an interview with Vouge magazine.

The Shakespeare in Love (1998) actor said that she felt “sh**ty” after she found out that she was getting paid less than her Iron Man co-star, Robert Downey Jr. “It can be frustrating. It can be painful. Your salary is a way to quantify what you’re worth. If men are being paid a lot more for doing the same thing, it feels shitty,” she was quoted as saying by Variety.com.

The Mamma Mia (2008) actor revealed that she used to earn 1/10th of what her fellow male actors received as payments.“A few years ago, on one of my big-budget films, I found that I was being paid 10 percent of what my male co-star was getting, and we were pretty even in status. I think people think that because I’m easy going and game to do things, I’ll just take as little as they offer. But it’s not about how much you get, it’s about how fair it is,” she told Hollywood reporter.

Despite being the highest grossing actor in 2017, the Avengers star said that the film industry was sexist. She told Marie Claire magazine, “I think every woman has [been underpaid], but unless I’m addressing it as a larger problem, for me to talk about my own personal experience with it feels a little obnoxious. It’s part of a larger conversation about feminism in general.”

Last year, the Oscar winning actor revealed that despite being the lead in a project, she got a fraction of her male co-star got, only because he was hot. She said in an interview, “I win my second Academy Award, and the next couple movies later, I was offered a movie. The male [lead] hadn’t had any kind of critical success, but had been in a movie where he looked hot. And he was offered $10 million, and I got offered $500,000. That’s the truth. And then they went and found a newcomer who did it for $50,000. So they made a savings of $450,000, probably to give the guy his bonuses.”

The Star Wars actor revealed that she was annoyed when she found out that she was being paid far less than her male lead Ashton Kutcher for No Strings Attached (2011). “I wasn’t as pissed as I should have been. In Hollywood, we are making 30 cents to the dollar.” Portman told Marie Claire.
