Alankrita Shrivastava directorial, Lipstick Under my Burkha, is grabbing all the headlines these days for all the wrong reasons. The movie, which is scheduled to release next week, was earlier in news when the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) denied it an ‘A’ certificate as they found the flick lady-oriented. The film has now been cleared by the Film Certification Tribunal (FCAT).

In a tete-a-tete with Konkona Sensharma, she said that the society easily categorize both women and men on the basis of what jobs they do. She said, “It’s convenient that we box women and men within certain roles. Then, everyone will know what to do. We’re going to be like this, they are going to be like that. Everything’s fine and we are all safe. But there are so many issues that crop up in different places – like female infanticide or violence against women”.

The actress also questioned as why was Rishi Kapoor’s character in Kapoor and Sons considered sweet, but Ratna Pathak Shah’s in Lipstick Under my Burkha objectionable. “(I think it is) easy to accept Rishi Kapoor’s character in ‘Kapoor and Sons’. It’s considered funny… almost sweet. It’s so normal and acceptable. Many times when we see sex scenes in a mainstream film, they serve the purpose of gratification and titillation. But here, we are showing them to reveal something about the situation of these women or some kind of circumstances. Not from a male gaze, but from a woman’s perspective”, she added.

Well, she has a point in this.
