Dhobi Ghat director Kiran Rao has got a talented husband in Aamir Khan, the acclaimed actor-filmmaker of Bollywood, known internationally. But he has never been a competition for his wife Kiran Rao.

As per Kiran, "I don't think I will ever be able to give competition to Aamir. Different kinds of films don't need to compete.” While Aamir is a provider of blockbusters like Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini, 3 Idiots and also his non-commercial film Peepli Live, Kiran is not too much into the box-office figures for her films. She said, “…some films earn Rs 100 crore, it's good for small films like ours (mine), because it strengthens the industry and more money comes in." Kiran is fonder of non-commercial and offbeat projects.

She is also happy about the trend of star-factor changing in present Bollywood, saying it is time-consuming but "(now) people don't necessarily go (to cinemas) because there is a star in the film. I don't think the star system, which existed 15 to 20 years ago, still exists." She has also no plans to come out with any commercial film in the near future as she said, "Because I do cinema that excites me. I don't even watch many huge films. I don't go to the cinema every weekend. I watch selective cinema and want to make my kind of films. I don't judge cinema on its box office success.” Presently Kiran is promoting Anand Gandhi's Ship of Theseus, which will release on July 19. She also said about her new film, "It's so small, such an unusual, challenging film to make. You would not be able to compare it with a commercial film."
