Kiran Rao To Make A Biopic on Gauhar Jaan

It seems that the biopics have become the flavour of season in Bollywood. Within the past few decades dozens of biographical dramas have made their way in Bollywood. Most of the filmmakers are with experimenting with biopics. And why not? After all, biopics not only enthral audiences’ imaginations with strong, inspirational stories but also lead filmmakers to make millions of bucks.

We now hear that the latest filmmaker who is keen to make a biopic is none other than Kiran Rao. The Dhobi Ghat director is keen to make a film on the life and times of courtesan-turned-singer Gauhar Jaan. Gauhar Jaan is considered the pioneer of the thumri tradition in Indian classical music, who cut a gramophone record in 1902.

"Since a few years, I have been thinking of making a film on the life of Gauhar Jaan. I was trying to write the script as well, but now I think I should leave it for some years. But her life was so interesting and very few people know about her. I think a film made on her will be a treat for the audience," Kiran said. Her next movie will be ‘Secret Superstar’ which is slated to release on August 4, 2017.
