Director Alankrita Shrivastava’s feminist drama, Lipstick Under My Burkha, has been hitting the headlines for quite a some time now. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) denied the theatrical release of the movie as they thought that it had too many abusive words which might offend Indian Muslims. However, much debate the movie was finally cleared for theatrical release in India after the country's Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT), decided that the film can be issued an adult certificate, equivalent to an NC-17 rating.

Although CBFC might have considered the movie as too ‘lady-oriented’ but the movie won laurels worldwide and was qualified for getting screened at Golden Globe awards. And now the film’s leading lady Konkona Sen Sharma won the best actress award for the movie at 2017’s New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF). “#NYIFF2017 Awards Winner Best Director is Konkona Sensharma @konkonas @chhabs @aroonshiv,” read the official account of NYIFF. She received the top honour for her performance in the movie. She was congratulated by the movie’s director. Yay! @konkonas wins best actress at @nyindianff for @lipstickmovie #lipstickundermyburkha,” Alankrita wrote on a microblogging site.

Well, Konkona not only bagged the best actress trophy but was also named the best director for her directorial debut A Death in the Gunj.
