Oscars should understand us rather we understanding them, says R. Balki

    R. Balki has been known to be a filmmaker who has a point to convey, respects in the methodology of cinema and yet knows how to entertain. With films like Cheeni Kum, Paa, English Vinglish(producer) at his background, R. Balki does get in the league of out of track filmmakers but sees no Oscar winning aspiration.

Oscars should understand us rather we understanding them, says R. Balki

Talking about the Oscar obsession that we Indians have, Balki said, "I firmly believe that the goal of a film is not whether it reaches the Oscars or not, because I don't think they (the jury at Oscars) understand a lot of things we do. I just believe that our films should be damn good for us. Why is our benchmark reaching the Oscars? Why isn't our benchmark that what we think is damn good?” He also added that he would any day prefer watching an entertaining film like Amar Akbar Anthony rather than going for an Oscar.

Balki also added that it is them who need to understand the concepts of Indian cinema instead of Indian cinema changing its dimensions according to them. “We are far away from the world standard. The world cannot understand us. The Oscars need to understand us, we don't have to try to make it to the Oscars," he said. With Shamitabh’s release just round the corner, the director looks too confidant.
