Pawni Pandey says digitisation has increased competition in the music industry

Singer Pawni Pandey, who is known for her song Laila Main Laila from the film Raees, says that competition in the music industry has grown multifold with budding singers uploading their songs on the web.“It’s not easy anymore. With digitisation, there are so many artists now. This makes it tough to make a mark. Everyone is working hard to do well. But I believe that there is destiny, which works,” says Pawni.

Not just playback singers but even actors such as Shraddha Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Parineeti Chopra have sung songs for their respective films. However, Pawni doesn’t view them as the competition. “There are a few actors who can really sing well. But I know they will not make a career out of this. They sing because it’s their passion. Plus, they don’t sing all their songs,” says Pawni, who sung Sharm Laaj (Gulaab Gang, 2014) and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (Policegiri, 2013).

The singer made her debut with the song Cheecho Cheech Ganeriyan from the Punjabi film Ek Jind Ek Jaan (2006). Talking about her journey so far, Pawni says, “Laila (picturised on Sunny Leone) is my first big hit in a commercial film. My journey has been a roller coaster ride. I have learnt so much. A song like Laila was a dream come true and I wish every singer gets to sing a song like this at least once in their career.”

On what’s planned for future, Pawni adds, “I have sung a few songs and the films are lined-up for release this year. Also, I am planing to come out with a single this year, besides my live shows and festivals where I get to sing.”
