Raj Kapoor's Co Stars Remember Him On His 93rd Birthday

    Remembering The Joker

His blank eyes spoke volumes of pathos. Amongst the grand trio of Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand, Raj was the born actor. He took to direction at the early age of 25 and proved to be equally successful as a director, editor and actor. Raj Kapoor’s RK Films has international popularity in Russia, Europe and even China. On his 93rd birthday actors who worked with him pay him glorious tributes.

Observing me with Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor gave me a coveted break as a parallel heroine opposite himself, Nargis and Premnath in Barsaat. As he picturized the song Ab Mera Kaun Sahara on me he took excellent close-ups of my tearful looks in natural light. Raj Kapoor gave equal space to me and Nargis. After each shot he ruffled my hairs and complimented me.

We first worked together in Sridhar’s Nazrana. In the scene where he boards a train after marrying my elder sister Usha Kiron, he offered me a namashkar. This was as a silent protest as he was in love with me. Raj Kapoor eclipsed all of us. In Sangam whilst lipping the song Dost Dost Na Raha he kept the camera on him only during the first and last antaras. Rajendra Kumar and I received equal focus in the close-ups of the song. No one could mingle laughter and tears like Raj Kapoor did.

Raj Kapoor was very impressed after viewing Charulata. He offered me Simi Grewal’s character in Mera Naam Joker long before approaching her. He also gave me a blank cheque and asked me to fill any amount I preferred. I politely and sadly refused as I was too busy in Bengali films. The thorough gentleman that he was, Raj Kapoor took it sportingly. There is no actor, director today at par with him.
