Filmmaker Karan Johar confirms that Sanjay Dutt was never associated with the film Shuddhi despite rumors of him linking him to the film. He said in an interview said, “The role of the antagonist in Shuddhi is by far one of the best written anatagonist roles. We have never offered the role to Sanjay. We have yet to cast anyone”.

Reportedly, Sanjay Dutt was approached to play a negative role in the film and it was also looking like Shuddhi would be his first film after the completion of his sentence.  According to a source, "He doesn't want to do a negative role immediately after coming out. He will start with OMG-Oh My God! director Umesh Shukla's film in which he plays a hero”.

Currently, Sanjay is serving a 42 month sentence for illegal possession of weapons in Yerwada Central Jail in Pune. Shuddhi is been directed by Karan Malhotra, which will be his second project with Dharma Productions. The movie is slated to release on Diwali 2016.
