Sayani Gupta Talks About Disparity In Bollywood

Sayani Gupta made her debut in the Bollywood industry with Gaurav Panjwani directorial Second Marriage Dot Com. However, she got her share of recognition when she played the role of a blind Pakistani Bangladeshi lesbian in the 2015 drama Margarita with a Straw that also starred Kalki Koechlin. After doing some more supporting roles, she is now all set for her upcoming venture, Jagga Jasoos, which released today. Even after doing many different roles, the actress is way behind in getting the star status.

In a recent interview, Sayani opened up about how she is still disappointed on the personal front. Talking about the inequality between the stars and the actors playing the supporting roles, she said, “Quite early in my career I have realised that your energy, efforts and talent will not be respected if you are not a star. We are a star-struck, star-oriented industry. That’s sad. This is the reason I want to be a star. I want to be the biggest star in the country only so that my efforts get counted”.

Her role in Jagga Jasoos was earlier a meatier one and had more screen time. However, it was later reduced and she is disenchanted about this. She added, “I believe whatever happens should happen for the best of the film so, I am sure whatever changes were made with my role were for the bigger picture. Having said that, it’s definitely disheartening that your role goes through such a big change over the course of the film. But it’s okay. I am not a star, I don’t have that power”.

On a related note, Jagga Jasoos is being helmed by Anurag Basu and is the first production venture for Ranbir Kapoor. Katrina Kaif plays the leading lady in it.
