Singer Rabbi Shergill says Bollywood has a strong connect with all things Punjab

Singer Rabbi Shergill, who is known for his soulful Punjabi songs such as Bulla Ki Jaana Main Kaun, is happy to observe that Punjab is an indispensible part of Bollywood. “Right from Prithvi Raj Kapoor to Dilip Kumar to Rajesh Khanna to Devanand to Amitabh Bachchan, all actors are somehow connected to Punjab and its roots. I cannot think of anyone who doesn’t have a connection with Punjab. And that’s why, Punjabi and Punjabi songs are integral to the industry, too,” says the singer , who was in the Capital to attend Mela Phulkari 2017.

He adds, “Hindi film industry has an umbilical relation with Punjab. This culture is pre-eminent One can’t get away from Punjabi culture even in pop culture,” adds Rabbi.

Though the singer now lives in Mumbai, he loves visiting the Capital, as his family and friends stay here. He also credits Delhi for fuelling his passion. “I had always been passionate about singing, even when I was in school. But it gained force and momentum during my college days,” says the SGTB Khalsa College (Delhi University) graduate.

He shares, “I studied because my family wanted me to do it. They believed that it will work as a backup for me. But after college, when I wanted to make a career, I knew it had to be something to do with music. So, I took a year off and worked for a radio station, made jingles and also composed music. Eventually, people appreciated my music and here I am,” says Shergill.
