The New York based actress, Preeti Gupta, knew beforehand that she will be approached by a lot of controversies after signing Unfreedom. The Raj Amit Kumar directorial touches upon the sensitive issues of homosexuality, rape and violence that the LGBTQ community members face. The flick was banned in India in January, however last week, a group of more than 500 students watched the film at IIT Powai.

The actress expressed, “It was overwhelming to see an audience mature enough to understand that lovemaking is poetic... The film was well-accepted at the Queer Film Festival in Mumbai last year and the makers are hoping we can re-apply for a release this year”. The actress plays Leela and Bhavani Lee plays her lesbian lover.

On being asked whether she is homosexual, Preeti confessed, “I'm a 100 per cent practicing heterosexual”. The flick was released in North America on January 29 this year and the makers hope to release it in Australia and UK soon. The inspiration behind the project was Faiz Ahmad Faiz's poem, Ye Dagh Dagh Ujala. The flick featured Victor Banerjee and Adil Hussain in the lead roles and it also had a huge ensemble cast.
