Vijay urges fans not to post anything that harms women post Dhanya Rajendran issue

Ending his silence on journalist Dhanya Rajendran being viciously trolled for criticising his film Sura, Tamil superstar Vijay has asked his fans to not abuse women. In a statement issued on Wednesday evening, he has asked his fans and supporters to not post anything on social media that can be taken as an insult to women.

“I respect women in society. Anybody has the freedom of expression to criticise anybody’s film. In my opinion, whatever the circumstances, no one should reveal contemptuous or disgraceful comments on woman. I urge everyone not to post anything on internet with the instinct that harms women.”

Chennai-based journalist Dhanya Rajendran posted a tweet in which she said she walked out of Shah Rukh Khan’s film Jab Harry Met Sejal and compared it with walking out of Vijay’s film Sura some years ago. The fans of Vijay didn’t take it well and trolling started almost instantaneously. From rape threats to attacking the journalist’s family, the trolling got worse in the next few days. Vijay fans made even a hashtag trend tragetting the journalist.

Rajendran had to finally complain to the police and her statement has been recorded. According to reports, the police are looking for four people who tweeted using aliases. The Twitter accounts have now been deleted.

Cases have been filed under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC), Information Technology Act 2000 and TN Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 2002.
