Last month, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley accepted Rahul Gandhi’s suggestion to exempt Braille paper from taxes for this year’s union budget. Earlier, there was customs duty on Braille hardware, which made it unaffordable for a majority of blind people. With the 2016 budget, the taxes on Braille paper have been reduced to zero.

Yami Gautam, for one, is ecstatic with this development. Since she is playing the role of a blind girl in her next film, she understands how important a move this is.

A source close to the actor reveals, “To prepare for the film, Yami has been training with a tutor at home, in order to understand how blind people go about their daily lives. She has also been reading up on the visually impaired. So, this news has affected her personally; she can relate to it.”

When contacted, Yami says, “I was glad to learn about this (the tax exemption), and I’m happy that the issue was highlighted. I feel that this will surely help make things easier for the visually impaired.”
