Juhi Chawla Is Not Comfortable With How Women Are Often Portrayed In Films!

The fact that girls are stepping out of their homes and doing what they wish to, must be celebrated, says actor Juhi Chawla. The 49-year-old says, “I’m happy that doors are opening up for women in every field of work, and not just in the film industry. Girls in cities are getting proper education and making their choices. This must be celebrated.”

However, Juhi isn’t comfortable with how women are often portrayed in films. “We are giving our women all the freedom and opportunities, but are we actually respecting them?,” she questions, before adding, “Being a part of the movie industry I will speak from the film point of view. Films mirror society and society mirrors films. Our girls today have to wear the tiniest of clothes, they are made to do item numbers and then they are being called item girls. Also the lyrics of our films nowadays are talking about relationship with girls, all about drinking and what not. I find this whole culture shallow.”

Expressing her concern, she adds, “It’s not good because what happens in films influences youngsters. They believe that they must be like what they see on screen. I am also concerned about how we are getting more and more fascinated by great bodies, photoshopped faces etc.”

The actor such for a film to be a hit, content matters the most — item numbers, skimpy clothes and crass lyrics are not the necessary ingredients. “Take Dangal for example. Besides great performances, nothing was done for the sake of doing it. There was not a single romantic scene in this family entertainer. Yet, it was one of the biggest hits of the year. I was happy for Aamir (Khan) and what he has done. So when people make good cinema, you realise that it’s not item numbers or skimpy dresses that make for a hit.”
