The Supreme Court of the United States recently legalized same-sex marriage throughout the U.S. The lead plaintiff responsible for the lawsuit was Jim Obergefell. 20th Century Fox has bought the life rights of Jim and his attorney Al Gerhardstein along with movie rights to the book ‘21 Years To Midnight’ by Obergefell and Debbie Cenziper.

Three days after the ruling, Variety published a special issue on marriage equality in which Obergefell wrote, “It’s reassuring to learn that what I was told as a child is true: One person — or two people, in our case — really can change the world”. He added, “We decided to stand up for our marriage and to no longer accept being treated as second-class citizens. We filed suit against the state of Ohio to demand recognition of our lawful, out-of-state marriage on John’s impending death certificate. Our decision, motivated by pain and anger, created a chain of results I never expected. The obvious result of that decision is my trip to the United States Supreme Court as the named plaintiff in Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark case about the right to marry throughout our country”.

In 2013, Jim Obergefell married John Arthur in Maryland. They were together for 21 years. John died three months after their wedding due to his ALS and the state of Ohio refused to put Jim’s name on John’s death certificate as his spouse.
