The Avengers’ sequel’s official title announced as The Avengers: Age of Ultron

It was an eventful day at Comic-Con 2013 on Saturday when the official title of the highly-anticipated Avengers sequel was announced by Marvel. It has been named The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which has also created a lot of confusion among fans about who or what is Ultron actually.

To recall the history, The Age of Ultron is a ten-issue comic series which was published earlier in 2013. It was all about the robot Ultron who endeavours to take over the world by spending time in the future. He also uses his creation, an android named Vision, as a method of devastation in the present. But that’s not where Ultron actually got started. The story actually dates back to Avengers #54 in 1968. Hank Pym, aka Ant-Man was the creator of Ultron. Ultron, after becoming self-aware, starts rebelling against Pym and also convinces him to forget that he was Pym’s creation. And then he sets off in his journey to take over the universe.

To clear all the confusion on the inclusion of Ultron in the Summer 2015 film, director Joss Whedon spoke out, "Well, because there was a book called 'Age of Ultron' quite recently, a lot of people have assumed that is what we're doing, but that is not the case.” He added, "We're doing our own version of the origin story for Ultron. In the origin story, there was Hank Pym, so a lot of people assumed that he will be in the mix. He's not. We're basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall by the wayside." But when asked on the creation of Ultron in the film sans Hank Pym, Whedon didn’t prefer to detail much with offering some hints only, "We're crafting our own version of it where his origin comes more directly from The Avengers we already know about. It's a little bit darker than the other film because Ultron is in the house. There's a science fiction theme that wasn't there in the other one. Ultron is definitely something that evolves, so we're going to get together a couple of different iterations. Nothing can be translated exactly as it was from the comics; particularly Ultron."
